Behind the Scenes - What really goes into a photo shoot
From the outside looking in, people often think that photography is pointing a camera and hitting that button thing that makes a clicky noise, then shazam! You have a perfect portrait!
Well sure! That's part of it (the clicky button thing is a shutter release), but there is so much more! I want to try and help you understand why we do what we do, why prices for portraits are what they are, and why does it take so long to get your images?!
Photographers like myself have spent a long time training (years!) to give you the best possible results. Granted, we are always learning, but we grow in our craft and deeply care about the product we deliver. To us, it's more than a product, it's a work of art that we've spent hours creating just for you! We want to try our best to give your memories the respect and care they deserve. They are truly created from the heart.
During the shoot, before we push the clicky button thing, we compose the shot. We make sure we are creating a flattering and beautiful image for you through the viewfinder. We have to consider things such as the perfect light to make sure our clients or subjects are not too bright or too dark (exposure). We have to watch out for the weird tree branch behind you to be sure it doesn't appear to be sticking out of your head in the final image! We also look for things like stray clumps of hair being blown by the wind, hair ties around your wrists, clothing bunching up oddly, making sure a stranger (or your little brother) isn't photobombing you from behind, the list goes on! And that's all before we hit the button! We do our best to make YOU look the best.
Why do I take multiple shots of the same pose dancing around you like a ninja? Well, shifting just 3 feet and getting a different angle can make all the difference. Also, did you just blink? Yup. Well, thankfully I took one where you weren't blinking =) Oh, and if I'm laying on the ground or doing a karate move over a stream, or standing on a table, it's just for another angle. So don't worry. I'm weird, but not losing it... yet... hopefully.
This is the rush for us. The love of the craft. We try to see things that you or other's may not notice and create something unique for you, because you are unique!
I'm guessing that's enough details and boring jargon for today, but I'll be back with more later for what happens when we all go home after your photo shoot!
Get out and enjoy your day!
